Junior Academy and Community Pathways

Across the Waves

The future of football in Wide Bay is at Waves!

Since 1958, when hardworking Italian immigrants crossed the ocean to build a community here in Bundaberg, our club has been built on passion, resilience, and family. Today, we honour that history by taking a significant step forward in developing the next generation of footballers.

In alignment with Football Queensland’s Academy Standards, we are introducing a new structure for our U9–U12 players. Whether your child dreams of playing professionally or simply loves kicking a ball with friends, we have a home for them.

Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming trials and our 2026 programs.

One philosophy, two pathways.

At ATWFC, we don’t believe in a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Children develop at different rates. However, we do believe in one identity. Every player at our club, regardless of their team, will be taught The Waves Way:

  • In Possession (Zing): We play with creativity, flair, and intent. We want players who are brave on the ball.
  • Out of Possession (La Famiglia): We defend together like a family. We work hard, we press high, and we protect our goal with intensity.

The Academy Stream

For the player who lives and breathes football.

The Academy is for players who are ready for a higher level of challenge, commitment, and intensity. It is designed to prepare players for the FQPL and beyond.

  • The Environment: High-intensity training focused on technical mastery, game intelligence (Skill Training), and rapid decision-making.
  • The Commitment: Mandatory twice-weekly training plus games.
  • The Competition: Academy teams will compete in the local Bundaberg advanced pool competition. We will place teams in a competition level that suits their development needs (playing up an age group or in a specific division) to ensure they are challenged.
  • Carnivals & Travel: A key part of regional player development is testing yourself against different styles of play. Academy teams will travel to selected carnivals throughout the season to represent ATWFC and the Wide Bay region.
  • The Coaching: Led by AFC-qualified technical staff and coaches, strictly following our periodisation model.

The Community Stream

For the player developing at their own pace.

We want to be crystal clear: Not being selected for the Academy does not mean being left behind. The Community stream is vital to our club. It is for players who want to build their confidence, enjoy the game, or who simply aren’t ready for the heavy commitment of the Academy yet.

  • The Environment: A focus on fun, fundamental skills, and falling in love with the game.
  • The Methodology: They follow the same football curriculum as the Academy. They learn the same skills, just in a lower-pressure environment.
  • The Pathway: Community players are constantly monitored. We call this the “Shadow Squad” concept—if a player excels in the Community stream, the door to the Academy is always open.

What to expect with The Academy difference

In 2026, we are going pro in how we track your child’s growth. This isn’t just about rolling a ball out on a random weeknight anymore. Here is what we are introducing as part of our Academy commitments:

Individual Development Plans (IDPs)

We are moving away from generic feedback. Academy players (and aspiring Community players) will have goals set for their Technical, Tactical, Physical, and Social development.

Player Reports & Tracking

We are implementing a formal review process. You will receive feedback on your child’s game time, attendance, and development progress. We are using data to help them improve, not just opinions.

Qualified Guidance

Our Technical Team, led by the Technical Director, oversees all coaches. We support the Community coaches with the same session plans used in the Academy to ensure consistency across the club.
